Mae – The Everglow
Flashback to early high school, day home sick. Like actual sick not the fake high school sick. My dad comes home with a CD just to make me feel better. He went to the local record shop (RIP) and told the guy behind the desk I was into Coheed & Cambria. “These guys are opening up for them in Europe” the guy told me dad as he recommended “The Everglow” by Mae. Needless to say I have a strong emotional connection to this album.
Mae is one of the few of my favorite bands I’d only seen once; at warped tour which everyone knows isn’t the best environment for first impressions. I was a bit nervous to see them try to live up to the album. They broke the ice and warmed up with a few non-Everglow tracks; “Bloom” and fan favorite “Embers & Envelopes” From there they dove straight into the 15 track deep album. I wasn’t disappointed. This tour was a long time coming and lived up to all my high school nostalgia. Any imperfections in the performance were masked out by the energy of the band and the 21 song setlist sure didn’t hurt either.
All Get Out
Having followed on the internet about Andy Hull producing All Get Out’s recent EP I was excited to get a piece of these guys live. Showed up during their set just as they were announcing their second to last song. The place was packed. With a primarily over 21 audience, the chatter was loud and I could tell it was distracting the band a bit especially when front man barked a quick “yo, shut the fuck up” during a slower part of the song. Despite that, the band was tight, the music was good, enough to convince me to buy a few of their songs.
