Emery perform “The Question”
Sleeping Giant, Wolves At the Gate
MAY 21 2015 | Epicentre, San Diego, CA
Emery
WOAH! Nostalgia. Emery. Completely wiped from my mind with time, and came crashing back on site of this tour poster. AND THEY’RE PLAYING MY FAVORITE ALBUM IN ENTIRETY? 2015 has been a great year for 10 – year anniversaries thus far. And as each other 10 year album celebration this year, The Question brought back plenty of vivid memories of an adolescent self exploring the depths of the emo scene and getting into heavier and screamier music as the upstate winters got colder.
Emery came on and just blasted their way through these songs with way more energy and excitement than I anticipated. The crowd followed in suit screaming along like it was 2006 all over again, and for a while somewhere between Studying Politics and The Weakest, everyone forgot that it wasn’t. The only chink in the armor that night was the fresh blood on bass who had seriously injured his foot just days into the tour. What his playing lacked from medical sedation he made up with the most head banging i’ve ever seen from a wheel chair. After blasting through the 12 song album, they still had enough for another 4 career spanning tracks. Safe to say everyone left the epicentre satisfied.
Unfortunately due to a box office error I missed the first few bands but got in just in time for Wolves At The Gate and Sleeping Giants both bands who i’m unfamiliar with, but both bands brought their own distinct vein of modern post-hardcore emo. Jesus was heavy in the air on this tour which I suppose was to be expected, however my personal preference is to limit religious preaching to 30-60 seconds per set. Each of these bands went full force and had cumulative 4-5 minutes of preaching through out their sets.
